Dramatic Burrows brace gives Posh Wembley joy

Harrison Burrows scored a dramatic brace of goals as Peterborough United edged past League One rivals Wycombe Wanderers to win the 2023/24 EFL Trophy.

In what had been a nervy stalemate for much of the match, Peterborough left-back Burrows drove in an effort from around the edge of the box, beating a poor dive by Franco Ravizzoli in the Wycombe goal.

However, just before we began second-half stoppage-time, on-loan Northern Ireland international Dale Taylor produced an excellent equaliser to seemingly deny Peterborough what would have been a deserved victory.

There was to be another twist in a dramatic end to the game, though, when Burrows, on the right hand side, swung in a deep cross that sailed over the head of Ravizzoli and nestled in the net with Burrows then able to step up and lift the trophy as captain.

It is the second ten that Peterborough have won the competition, ten years after winning it against Chesterfield in the 2013/14 campaign and also keeps their 100% record of games at Wembley Stadium intact.

Peterborough will now turn their attention back to the league where they remain just about in contention for a top two spot and automatic promotion. Posh face Port Vale on Wednesday evening.

Wycombe, on the other hand, are firmly ensconced in the middle-of-the-table, as Matt Bloomfield looks to build towards next season. Their next outing sees them face Peterborough’s promotion-chasing rivals Derby County on Wednesday.
